How to Check Your Tyre Tread Depth at Home

The 20p Test Method

The quickest way to check your tread depth is using a 20p coin. Insert the coin into the main grooves of your tyre. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread is likely below the legal limit of 1.6mm and needs immediate replacement.

Test multiple points across the width of the tyre and around the circumference. Tyres often wear unevenly, so checking one spot is not enough.

Using a Tread Depth Gauge

For more accurate readings, purchase a tread depth gauge from any motor accessory shop. These inexpensive tools give precise millimetre readings. Simply place the probe into the groove and read the measurement.

Remember that while 1.6mm is the legal minimum, safety experts recommend replacing tyres when they reach 3mm. Wet braking distances increase dramatically as tread wears below this level.

Tyre Wear Indicators

Most modern tyres have built-in tread wear indicators — small raised bars that appear when the tread reaches 1.6mm. If these bars are flush with the surrounding tread, your tyre is at the legal limit.

Regular checks every month take just a few minutes and could save your life. If your tyres are nearing replacement, book a mobile tyre fitting service to have new tyres fitted at your convenience.
