Check Tread Depth Before Winter
While the legal minimum is 1.6mm, safety experts strongly recommend having at least 3mm of tread depth before winter sets in. Tread depth is critical for displacing water, slush, and snow from beneath the tyre. Below 3mm, wet-weather braking distances increase dramatically, and winter performance becomes dangerous.
Monitor Tyre Pressure in Cold Weather
For every 1°C the temperature drops, tyres lose approximately 1 PSI of pressure. A tyre correctly inflated at 20°C could be significantly underinflated at 0°C. Check pressures weekly during winter and always before long journeys. Remember to check the spare if your vehicle has one.
Consider Winter Tyres
Winter tyres use a softer rubber compound that stays flexible below 7°C, providing better grip, shorter braking distances, and improved handling in cold, wet, and snowy conditions. They also feature deeper tread patterns with more sipes for snow and ice traction.
In the UK, winter tyres are particularly beneficial for drivers in Scotland, northern England, and rural areas with poor winter road maintenance. Even in milder southern regions, they provide a significant safety margin during cold snaps.

Inspect tyres regularly for cuts, bulges, and embedded debris that could worsen in cold conditions.
