What Is Tyre Balancing and Why Do You Need It?

What Causes Wheel Imbalance?

Even brand new tyres and wheels are not perfectly uniform in weight distribution. Small imperfections in manufacturing, plus variations in valve stem weight, create uneven mass around the wheel assembly. At speed, these imbalances cause the wheel to wobble.

Symptoms of Unbalanced Wheels

The most common sign is vibration through the steering wheel, typically noticeable at motorway speeds. You may also experience uneven tyre wear, reduced handling confidence, and increased stress on suspension components.

The Balancing Process

A technician mounts your wheel on a balancing machine that spins it at high speed to detect heavy spots. Small weights are then attached to the rim opposite these heavy spots to equalise the distribution. The process takes just a few minutes per wheel.

When Should You Balance Your Tyres?

Always balance wheels after fitting new tyres, following a puncture repair, or if you hit a pothole or kerb hard. Many garages recommend checking balance every 12 months or if you notice vibration.

Mobile tyre fitting services include wheel balancing as standard with every new tyre fitted, ensuring your vehicle drives smoothly from the moment the technician leaves.
